Exercise, sets, reps, and load Minimum — the core data for every exercise in every session

For each exercise: the name of the movement, the number of sets completed, the number of repetitions in each set, and the load used. For exercises where the reps varied across sets — as they commonly do when the final set is taken closer to failure than the first — record each set separately: 3×12 (12, 12, 10) at 40kg captures more information than 3×12 at 40kg. Three to four consecutive sessions showing declining performance, elevated RIR requirements at unchanged loads, and below-average recovery notes is the deload signal — an objective pattern that the log makes unmissable and that the trainee without a log may not recognise until the fatigue has accumulated into an overtraining state.

There is no objectively superior training log format. There is only the format that the individual trainee will maintain consistently across weeks and months without friction — and the format that creates the least friction is different for different people. The four formats below each serve the minimum and optional fields described above. The choice between them is a practical one about which recording method is most likely to become a consistent habit rather than an occasional practice.

Four training log formats — practical characteristics of each

Each format serves the same data requirements. The choice is entirely a matter of which friction level is lowest for the individual trainee.

Pocket notebook — pen and paper

The most durable, most reliable, and most friction-free format for the trainee who is not comfortable with technology in the training environment. A small notebook — A6 or similar — kept in the gym bag, with one page per session. No battery, no signal requirement, no app to open. The only format that can be completed mid-session between sets without any device interaction. The physical log at twelve months is a tangible object with specific weight and presence that a digital record does not replicate — and for many over-50 trainees it is the most motivating format precisely because it is physical.

Spreadsheet — phone or computer

The most analytically powerful format — allowing sorting, filtering, and charting that a notebook cannot provide. A simple spreadsheet with columns for date, session number, exercise, sets, reps, load, RIR, and notes can be completed on a phone between sets or on a computer after the session. The friction of logging is lower than the spreadsheet for the trainee who dislikes manual data entry, and the automatic previous-session display removes the need to manually locate the relevant entry before beginning. The limitation is that the data is held by the app provider and is not easily exported if the app is discontinued or the subscription lapses. For the trainee who will use it consistently, the convenience advantage outweighs this limitation.

Hybrid — pre-written session card, transferred to log

The format recommended for the trainee who finds in-session logging disruptive to concentration. Write the planned session on an index card before leaving for the gym — exercise, target sets, target reps, previous load, and space for actual load and notes. Complete the card during the session. Transfer the session data to the permanent log after returning home. The card keeps the session focused and plan-governed; the transfer provides the opportunity to add recovery notes and session comment in the more reflective post-session environment. More steps than the notebook but more focused during the session itself.

Begin the log at the first session. Not the second. Not when the training feels established enough to be worth recording.
