How Hard Should You Train After 50?

The training log is the most reliable signal

Subjective feeling on any given day is an unreliable guide to training intensity. Some days everything feels heavy for reasons that have nothing to do with the training. The log provides the objective record — the actual weights, actual reps, and actual notes on how the session felt — that allows intensity management decisions to be made on the basis of evidence rather than the mood of the morning.

The 24 to 48 hour response is the real test

The session itself is not the complete measure of whether the intensity was appropriate. The response in the 24 to 48 hours following it is. Appropriate soreness that resolves within 48 hours and leaves the body ready for the next session is a productive training response.
